Pushing the boat out for Scotland’s young people

In this blog, we’re delighted to share a great example of how digital learning has meaning and purpose for society.

We’ll also explain how working with Scottish Waterways Trust (SWT), an independent registered charity, we’re proud to be helping disadvantaged young people gain the skills and confidence they need to find work and their way in society.

Opportunities to improve

SWT bring vibrancy, life and opportunities to some of the nation’s most disadvantaged communities; encourage people to get active and improve their health and mental wellbeing; and safeguard and improve the rich heritage and environments of Scotland’s canals.

Digital learning strategy

SWT undertakes innovative canal-based projects that create a brighter future for the people, communities and wildlife of Scotland. Their flagship employability and training initiative, canal college®, is aimed at getting disadvantaged 16-30 year olds into work.

canal college® needed an accessible solution to enable learning wherever their skills development activities take place and we were delighted to help develop their online and offline mobile digital learning strategy.

Learning in any environment

We created a customised learning platform and mobile app so canal college® students can access their course planner, task list, workbook and details of their progress through the course as well as the ability to upload evidence of their learning.

Our learning platform provides one central place to store each individual’s learning evidence and tutors at canal college® can use the app to view evidence and award an appropriate grade.

Realising the vision

Having a truly online and offline mobile learning solution will enable canal college® to realise their vision of learning completed almost entirely outdoors.

The self-directed approach to learning helps participants work towards a Saltire Award, John Muir Award, Heritage Heroes Award and SQA Level 5 Unit in Working Safely. And future developments will see the awards provided as digital badges via the mobile app.
