A Day in the Life of a Marketing Executive

My Degree at Edinburgh Napier University covered a variety of different subjects– journalism, creative writing, media regulations and English literature. The diversity of modules allowed me to apply myself to a number of different projects, learning a variety of skills and techniques that I could use towards my future career.

Like most students, post-graduation can be rather daunting – I couldn’t rely on my parents financial backing forever, could I? It wasn’t long after finishing up an internship in Edinburgh that I found myself working as part of the busy marketing team here at eCom.

As part of the marketing department, I am responsible for expanding the company brand and increasing product awareness. A typical day often involves a lot of research, finding new ideas to use for marketing campaigns which will generate greater brand exposure and assist with product sales or interest. Other areas I work on are social media activity, website analysis with Google Analytics as well as producing content such as blogs, case studies and marketing emails.

We normally kick start the week with a meeting about objectives we wish to achieve as well as evaluating campaigns we have previously worked on. Of course we wouldn’t get too far without our talented design team, who we work very closely with. It’s a collaborative effort which requires their artistic touch to ensure our marketing content is eye catching and effective.

Over the past year I have been involved in a variety of campaigns, which has allowed me to learn a range of valuable skills along the way. During my time here I have particularly enjoyed assisting with the redesign of the new website and helping with a marketing strategy for the company’s annual User Conference. Whilst it has been challenging at times it has been very rewarding to see the success of the end product.

It only seems like yesterday I was living the student life of late night library sessions and pizza for breakfast. However, I’ve loved every minute here at eCom and very much relish the new projects and tasks that lie ahead.
