eLN Glasgow Unconference

The most recent eLearning Network (eLN) event in Glasgow took a two-pronged approach to the conference format. The morning consisted of a range of speaker presentations and the afternoon was in an ‘unconference’ format where we got to set the stage, present and participate in the conversations.

Ensuring your eLearning Delivers for the Business
Lisa Minogue-White (Pluralsight)

Lisa explored the reasons why L&D exists, primarily for organisational effectiveness. She highlighted the importance of demonstrating the value of learning, and the need to quantify and set metrics on what we want our learners to achieve. She outlined a process to implement this organisational effective learning:

  1. Create a plan around a shared understanding of objectives
  2. Evaluate your team’s readiness
  3. Prepare your team for the job
  4. Execute, iterate and repeat

Video Production on a Budget
Mark Davies (See Learning)

Mark told us that we all have the ability to make engaging videos for learning and development, showing us how to set-up video production with a smartphone and technology for under £100.

Here at eCom we’ve been creating videos in a very similar way and here is an example of our a case study video with the International Well Control Forum (IWCF)

Video Drama Made Easy
Tom Hickmore (Nice Media)

Tom introduced us to the topic of drama for video and how it increases engagement through emotional buy-in. He emphasised that to create a video with effective drama it needs emotion to build the story to a crisis and to make your characters model personal growth, thus creating the story.

Some tips from Tom on how to use dramatic design and techniques include:

  • Invest time in the character process.
  • Create a matrix for each of the characters  
  • Assign a character archetype
  • Distinguish their positive and negative character traits to provide conflict.

Unconference conversations
I got a lot from the morning presentations and gained an equal amount from the afternoon discussions.

> Digital learning project planning
My colleague Shona began a discussion on project management for digital learning projects, something which is often overshadowed by the creative process. Shona highlighted eCom’s project process and our experiences with clients.

> Digital badging
Questions were raised on the value of digital badging. There were discussions on the requirements for consistent measurement to achieve specific digital badges and the role of assessment.

At the end of the day

The day integrated the best bits of both types of conference. I learned loads about my role as an instructional designer and got to meet with a vibrant and engaged community of like-minded learning and development practitioners.
